The Collect for the First Sunday in Advent

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of

darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of

this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in

great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in

his glorious Majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may

rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with

thee and the Holy Ghost, One God, now and for ever. Amen.

William Bennett Drugs and the Face of Evil quote/article

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn The Gulag Archipelago quote (pages 175-176)

Let any reader who thinks that this book is going to be a political indictment shut it right now. If it were only that easy! If it were just that there were some evil persons, people who have committed evil acts, and had to be identified and eliminated. But the line dividing good and evil runs through the heart of every human being. And who is going to eliminate part of his own heart? In the lifetime of one heart, this line shifts even within it, sometimes pressed by exultant evil, at other times opening room for the flowering of good. One person at different ages and in different situations can be a completely different individual. At times, he may be close to being a devil, at others to being a saint. But the name doesn’t change and we attribute everything to him.

C.S. Lewis The Screwtape Letters quote (Preface, page 9, 1943 edition)

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can

fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other

is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.

George Weigel Death of a heresy quote/selection:

What died in the Soviet Union on August 21, 1991, was, in the strict sense of the term, a heresy. For Communism was never just economic foolishness married (in its Leninist form) to draconian methods of social control; Communism was a false doctrine, a congeries of false teachings about human nature, human community, human history, and human destiny. Therein lay its power; its power to attract, and its power to coerce.

How Do We Hear From God?

Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians 4: 11-13

11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to

be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s

people for works of service, so the body of Christ may be built up 13 until

we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and

become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ,

God, give us grace to accept with serenity

the things that cannot be changed,

Courage to change the things

which should be changed,

and the Wisdom to distinguish

the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,

Enjoying one moment at a time,

Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,

Taking, as Jesus did,

This sinful world as it is,

Not as I would have it,

Trusting that You will make all things right,

If I surrender to Your will,

So that I may be reasonable happy in this life,

And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

Book of Common Prayer – For a Blessing on the Families of the Lord

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who settest the solitary in families; We commend to thy continual care the homes in which thy people dwell. Put far from them, we beseech thee, every root of bitterness, the desire of vain-glory, and the pride of life. Fill our homes with faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness. Knit together in constant affection those who, in holy wedlock, have been made one flesh; turn the hearts of the parents to the children, and the hearts of the children to the parents; and so enkindle fervent charity among us all, that we be evermore kindly affectioned one to another; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Leonard Woolf The Journey Not the Arrival Matters: An Autobiography of the Years 1939 to 1969 quote (page 158)

Looking back at the age of eighty-eight over the fifty-seven years of my political work in England, knowing what I aimed at and the results, meditating on the history of Britain and the world since 1914, I see clearly that I achieved practically nothing. The world today and the history of the human anthill during the last fifty-seven years would be exactly the same as it is if I had played pingpong instead of sitting on committees and writing books and memoranda. I have therefore to make the rather ignominious confession to myself and to anyone who may read this book that I must have in a long life ground through between 150,000 and 200,000 hours of perfectly useless work.

Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 15: 58

58Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

perceive that, according to his promise, he abideth with his Church on earth,

Charles Williams The Descent of the Dove: A Short History of the Holy Spirit in the Church quote (page 1)

The beginning of Christendom is, strictly, at a point out of time. A metaphysical trigonometry finds it among the spiritual Secrets, at the meeting of two heavenward lines, one drawn from Bethany along the Ascent of Messias, the other from Jerusalem against the Descent of the Paraclete. That measurement, the measurement of eternity in operation, of the bright cloud and the rushing wind, is, in effect, theology.

The Sweetness in Suffering

Dorothy Sayers Letters to a Diminished Church quote (chapter 2, page 12)

The creative will presses on to its end, regardless of what it may suffer by the way. It does not choose suffering, but it will not avoid it, and must expect it. We say that it is love, and sacrifices itself for what it loves; and this is true, provided we understand what we mean by sacrifice. Sacrifice is what it looks like to other people, but to that-which-loves I think it does not appear so. When one really cares, the self is forgotten, and the sacrifice becomes only a part of the activity. Ask yourself: if there is something you supremely want to do, do you count as self-sacrifice the difficulties encountered or the other possible activities cast aside? You do not. The time when you deliberately say, “I must sacrifice this, that, or the other” is when you do not supremely desire the end in view. At such times you are doing your duty, and that is admirable, but it is not love. But as soon as your duty becomes your love the self-sacrifice is taken for granted, and, whatever the world calls it, you call it so no longer.

“Comfort yourself with Him who holds you fastened to the cross. He will loose you when He thinks fit.”

Brother Lawrence The Practice of the Presence of God page 39

“I wish you could convince yourself that God is often (in some sense) nearer to us, and more effectually present with us, in sickness than in health.”
